Statewide bonding bill has projects for Iron Range and Northern Minnesota will create thousands of construction and long-term jobs

Today, State Representative Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) voted in support of a statewide bonding package that invests $496 million into Minnesota’s aging infrastructure and creates thousands of construction and long-term jobs. Rep. Melin, who serves on the House Capital Investment Committee, was pleased that the final bonding bill made a greater investment in repairing infrastructure than earlier versions and now includes Iron Range and Northern Minnesota projects. The bill passed the House of Representatives on a vote of 99 to 32.

“There is an allocation for a Science, Technology, and Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) classroom at Hibbing Community College. It is to renovate the 45-year old laboratory space used for general science, biology, and chemistry into a modern, efficient and flexible space. This investment will allow HCC to increase course delivery and collaboration with the area workforce," stated Rep. Melin.

Rep. Melin added, "Itasca Community College also receives bonding to renovate and expand their student services space. In addition to these important investments in our community colleges, the Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District is also eligible for additional funding for its new wastewater treatment facility. This available appropriation to CIRSSD will help keep usage rates low for residents of Chisholm, Kinney, Buhl, and Great Scott Township.”

Other bonding for construction and repair of roads and bridges, buildings on college campuses, veterans’ homes and Greater Minnesota business development grants will put thousands of people to work. Additionally, it is a wise time to bond because taxpayer dollars are stretched further by taking advantage of current record low interest rates and construction bids.

“I very much wanted a robust and strategic bonding package this session to create jobs and spur the economy. The bill passed today will do that and it has a great direct benefit to our region,” concluded Rep. Melin.
