MELIN GETS TO WORK ON FIRST DAY

(ST. PAUL) -- Rep. Carly Melin (DFL-Hibbing) had her first full day on the job today in St. Paul. Rep. Melin had a whirlwind schedule, meeting with constituents, discussing jobs, and talking with Governor Mark Dayton. The newest state representative was sworn in yesterday in Hibbing.

Rep. Melin started the day meeting with St. Scholastica students from Chisholm who were visiting the Capitol to share their concerns about cuts in higher education funding and the state grant program. “I share student and parent concerns about rising tuition costs and affordability," said Melin. “As a public school graduate and daughter of a community college teacher, I know how important higher education is to a region’s economic stability. I will fight harmful cuts in higher education funding.”

After meeting with students Rep. Melin settled in to her third floor office in the State Office Building. She prepared for an evening meeting of the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, its first with its current makeup. “Serving on the IRRRB will give me an additional platform to serve my constituents. I am focused on job retention and creating economic growth on the Iron Range and in the Northland,” said Melin.

At the end of the day, Rep. Melin stopped by to meet with Governor Mark Dayton. "I welcome our state's newest representative to the Capitol and I congratulate her on her outstanding victory. I look forward to working with her on behalf of our constituents to bring jobs to the Range and on other important projects."

“After talking with so many of my neighbors across the district this winter about how I can fight for them, I am looking forward to finally getting to work,” said Melin. Minnesota is facing a $6.2 billion deficit, which the legislature and Governor must balance before the scheduled adjournment in late May. “I pledge to work with Speaker Zellers and my colleagues in the Minnesota House of Representatives to craft a budget that makes wise investments in our people and grows jobs for today and the future, while protecting Minnesota’s most vulnerable citizens.”

Rep. Melin will serve on three House committees: Jobs and Economic Development Finance, Capital Investment, and Judiciary Policy and Finance. She has been appointed to the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board.
