NEWS RELEASE

LEGISLATORS RECEIVE REFORM INPUT

ST. PAUL – Rep. Kelby Woodard, R-Belle Plaine, and Sen. DeKruif, R-Elysian, recently received direct feedback from local business people, citizens and public officials on ways the state can improve the way it serves Minnesotans.

“We are in the process of compiling an historic package of bills called Reform 2.0 to re-shape Minnesota’s government,” Woodard said. “These reforms will be based on direct input from Minnesotans so that our businesses can compete on a global level. The clear message we received from the nearly 50 concerned citizens who participated in the forum at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine is strikingly similar to what has been heard throughout the state. There is an urgent need to eliminate marginal and burdensome regulations; revamp a complex tax code which acts as a disincentive to entrepreneurship; reduce inefficiencies in unemployment insurance; and identify functions the state is performing which would be better handled by the private sector.

“It is clear that our small businesses are severely hindered by an outdated regulatory and tax system in our state,” Woodard said. “We have accumulated so many layers of red tape over the years that our system has become redundant and quite burdensome for entrepreneurs. These are not faceless corporations. These are literally our neighbors on Main Street.”

Woodard added that he understands we are still feeling the pinch of the recession. He said it is imperative that we focus on improving our business climate instead of asking hard-working Minnesotans to pay more in taxes.
