To the editor,
I encourage high school juniors to take advantage of a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the Capitol and participate in the legislative process by applying for a spot in the House page program. Please pass this information along to anyone you think may be interested.
The page program is open to all Minnesota juniors, whether they attend public or private schools or are home schooled. The program offers an opportunity for students to spend a week participating in a variety of activities at the Capitol in St. Paul, each designed to further the understanding of our state government and the legislative process.
Some of the page activities include:
•Individual meetings with state Reps. designed to allow students to discuss the issues that matter most to them.
•Experiencing the legislative process first-hand by assisting members during the legislative session.
•Participating in a mock committee session designed to help develop students’ leadership skills and to inspire them to think critically about the issues confronting our state.
•Providing students with the opportunity to meet with constitutional officers, members of the judiciary, lobbyists and members of the media.
Students are urged to contact their guidance counselors, social studies teachers or click here for more information. The weekly sessions in 2012 run from mid-February until late April.
Applications must be postmarked by Dec. 16 and the competition is pretty strong, so be sure to put together your best submission.
Sincerely,
Rep. Kelby Woodard
