Dear Neighbor,
We have reached the final day of the 2011 regular session and the governor has yet to sign the budget bills. This is a disappointing development, yet our commitment in finding a breakthrough remains strong.
As a reminder, the Legislature sent the governor a proposal which balances the budget without raising taxes by sticking to the $34 billion we anticipate in revenue. This is not a bare-bones government proposal. The fact is our budget includes a 6-percent increase over the current biennium. Even DFL Minority Leader Paul Thiessen agrees that Republicans have already compromised on the budget and you can click here to read more.
The Governor continues to insist upon spending nearly $2 billion that we do not have by increasing taxes on Minnesotans. The stance of the Legislature and the Governor is illustrated in a graphic. Click here to see it.
We will continue to try to work with the governor on a solution that includes needed reforms and that lives within our means. I have encouraged the governor to sign the K-12 education finance bill to ensure our school districts can begin to plan their budgets. The education budget accounts for roughly 40 percent of the state budget and should be made a priority.
I sincerely hope the governor will agree to work within the means of Minnesota taxpayers. We have been working around the clock to provide a budget agreeable to Minnesotans and remain optimistic the governor will work with us towards that end.
Warm Regards,
Kelby
