Bills advancing to help charter schools, at-risk students

Dear Neighbor,

Two separate bills I have authored pertaining to education are making progress in the Legislature. One strengthens our charter schools and the other aids at-risk students.

The charter schools bill (S.F. 55) received broad bipartisan support as it passed the House floor this week. There are 64 charter schools in Minnesota which may be forced to close as an unintended consequence stemming from changes in re-application guidelines. My legislation fixes that problem while strengthening the accountability to taxpayers and parents for these innovative schools.

The second bill I am leading through the House is the Americorps Innovation Act (H.F. 617). This legislation aligns the Americorps program in Minnesota to federal law. As a result, organizations like Promise Fellows in Northfield and Reading Corps in Belle Plain can continue to provide academic and personal support for our at-risk students. There is bipartisan support for this bill as well as it makes its way through the conference committee process.

I will keep you updated as these bills advance and, I welcome your input. You can reach me by emailing rep.kelby.woodard@house.mn.

Warm regards,
Kelby
