Neighbor-
The House brought forth budget targets today. It is a priorities-based package to help us balance the budget and live within our means without raising taxes.
Our plan provides middle-class tax relief, while prioritizing funding for classrooms, veterans and courts. It is a top priority to protect the safety nets for our elderly and disabled citizens.
Government does some things well and we should continue supporting those areas. There are other things government doesn't do so well and we should take inventory on how money is being spent in those areas.
Our budget plan focuses on improving service through reform and incentives. It also reduces costs, realigns government to match economic reality and reforms government to provide a sustainable future. This gives our taxpayers what they want: more efficient service, reduced bureaucracy and smaller government.
Key points include:
Cutting $3.6 billion in future spending
Reducing state agency funding by 15 percent.
Requiring 15-percent reduction in state government by 2015
Minnesota's government has been growing at an unsustainable rate the last couple of decades and it's going to take more time to regain fiscal balance. If we don’t reform government, our cycle of deficits will continue.
The Legislature will continue working to finalize the details of our budget targets. I will let you know how things develop as they continue this process.
Sincerely,
Kelby
