LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Swedzinski

Schwans Ice Cream Day at the Capitol was on Friday. We served novelties to the members at the Legislature. The members and staff in the House chambers really enjoyed the ice cream. I’d like to thank Schwans Company for creating such great products. It is a real treat every year!

The House passed HF 2786 on Thursday with a bi-partisan vote of 84-44. This bill I chief authored, requires the Department of Revenue to pay CY 2011 LGA amounts to the cities that had their payments withheld because the cities did not meet the filing standards and guidelines established by the Office of the State Auditor (OSA) for filing financial reports, provided that the city files all missing documents by May 31, 2012. Current law required meeting the current reporting requirements in order to receive LGA.

Vesta and Echo are area cities that are affected by this bill. Vesta is set to receive, $41,163 and Echo is set to receive $35,363.
I’d also like to mention the construction on highway 68. The DOT has put together some information on the construction.

This week the Vikings stadium bill was voted down from passing the Government Operations and Elections Committee to another committee. The vote was defeated by a 9 -6 vote. In 2006, when the new Twins stadium was built the DFL put up half the votes and Republicans put up half of the required votes. Republicans and Democrats put up half of their ‘yes’ votes in all but one committee, and the bill made it to the House floor. Once on the floor, the bill was approved after the GOP majority put up 38 ‘yes’ votes, and Democrats offered 33.

As planting season continues for our famers I’d like to remind folks to keep a close watch on the roads. I hope everyone has a safe and successful spring
.
Sincerely,

Chris
