Late Tuesday night and Wednesday we voted on and passed a number important bills that will help balance our budget this week. We voted on a K-12 Education bill, a Higher Education bill and an Environment bill Tuesday as well as an Agriculture bill Wednesday.
K-12 Education:
This bill lives up to our commitment to prioritize schools and reform education. It provides stable, equitable funding for schools across the state. We’re also creating new accountability programs and relieving schools of costly mandates.
• Increases Per-pupil funding
• Creates a new teacher evaluation system based on student academic achievement and locally-determined factors. This new evaluation will replace the seniority-based retention process.
• Relieves districts of state-imposed mandates.
Higher Education:
Our Higher Education Finance Bill focuses on students by fully funding programs that help them pay for college – the state grant program – and making no reductions to the work study program. It also creates tuition controls to protect students from unreasonable tuition increases and sets performance benchmarks for the U of M and MnSCU.
• Fully funds the State Grant Program
• No reduction to Work Study Program
• Encourages schools to offer “locked-in” tuition rates to students for their four years.
Environment:
The House Environment Bill sets priorities and funds those priorities. Determining priorities is paramount for accountable and responsible spending that provides long-term benefits for our environment and economy.
Agriculture:
Minnesota’s agricultural industry an integral component of our state’s economy and the proposed bill prioritizes funding to maintain the integrity and safety of the food supply in Minnesota.
Stay tuned for more to come in the budget process.
