This week I introduced a bill in the Higher Education committee. We also received budget targets from House committees which is the first step in balancing our budget.
Higher Education Bill:
The financial crisis across the state calls for real and substantive reform and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities and the University of Minnesota systems will need to make structural reforms to push revenue toward classrooms and reduce administrative overhead.
Minnesotans pay the third-highest average tuition in the nation and the highest average tuition in the Midwest to attend our community and technical colleges and the tenth highest average tuition in the nation to attend our public four-year institutions. Tuition has also increased every year since FY 2002 regardless of change in state appropriation.
During these economic times we need to send a message that we are serious about reforming all aspects of government, including higher education. We can’t continue to pass along the costs directly on to our students.
Budget Targets:
This week budget targets came out from House committees, a first step in balancing the budget. It is time to get our economy back on track and stop outrageous spending. We need to get Minnesotans back to work. Lawmakers project $3.6 billion in cuts for future spending along with reducing agency funding by 15 percent across the board. The budget targets also funds priorities while slowing the growth of government spending to 15%.
Chris’ Travels
Last weekend I traveled to Montevideo for a meeting regarding flood issues. Rep. Lyle Koenen was also present along with members of the surrounding communities. We talked about potential flood relief for Minnesota communities and we also had great dialogue with community members. If you have any questions about flood insurance, or flood relief in general, please feel free to contact my office, I am happy to help.
I always appreciate your input. If you could please fill out this online survey, if you haven’t already, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. www.surveymonkey.com/21Asurvey
