St. Paul – Thursday Legislators received budget targets from Republican lawmakers, who in House committees set forth a budget to erase the deficit. These budget targets include a tax cut to middle class Minnesotans. Lawmakers project $3.6 billion in cuts for future spending along with reducing agency funding by 15 percent across the board. The budget targets also funds priorities while slowing the growth of government spending.
“Our current state spending outpaces available revenue by 3 to 1,” said Rep. Swedzinski. “These budget targets set priorities, and align our spending with revenue taken in. We need to harness government growth and live within our means.”
Funding for classrooms, veterans and courts will not change according to budget targets released today, and nursing homes or long term care will be protected.
Rep. Swedzinski added, “Minnesotans want smaller government, less fraud and waste and reduced bureaucracy. With these budget targets we plan to do that with reforms to government programs and agencies. It is time we begin these reforms and become a nationwide leader in the economic recovery process.”
