St. Paul – House Republicans passed their first budget bill on Thursday, January 27th. The Early Action Budget Bill has passed all committees and was heard on the floor Thursday afternoon. Amendments have been made to this bill so that Local Government Aid (LGA) remains the same for 2011 as 2010 unless certified for less. Each city and county will be receiving in 2011 what they received in 2010.
“With a budget deficit at $6.2 billion, spending is the issue that needs to be addressed in the State Legislature and through this bill we are able to reduce the deficit by $1 billion,” said Rep. Swedzinski.
House file 130 is said to address structural spending issues by making one-time reductions from this year permanent and it also prevents state agencies from spending unnecessary funds at the end of the year.
“If the issue of spending is not addressed we will continue to see higher deficits, high unemployment and a stagnant economy. There are several states including New York that are currently investigating the process of declaring bankruptcy which is a result of not facing spending issues,” said Rep. Swedzinski. “We do not want that to happen here in Minnesota. The legislature has to make the hard choices now and stop kicking the can of responsibility in to the future.”
Swedzinski (R-Ghent) is serving his first term at the Minnesota House of Representatives.
