NEWS RELEASE

REP. SCHOMACKER OUTLINES JOBS AND ECONOMY PROVISIONS IN REFORM 2.0

ST. PAUL – The top goal for all state lawmakers this session is to create jobs and permanently turn Minnesota’s economy around. State Representative Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne) said there are several provisions in the Legislature’s Reform 2.0 agenda that will address these issues.

“Southwestern Minnesota understands that businesses will relocate to South Dakota or Iowa if state government doesn’t create a more job-friendly state,” Schomacker said. “We need to give business owners a reason to stay in Minnesota and expand their workforce.”

Schomacker said residents and community leaders shared their reform input with legislative leaders once the 2011 legislative session ended. Their ideas are the basis for the Reform 2.0 agenda, many of which are now being introduced and debated in Minnesota House committees.

When asked how to create more jobs and improve the economy in our state, Minnesotans responded with a number of suggestions. Some of the highlights became part of Reform 2.0. They include: excluding the ?rst $100,000 in value of business property from the statewide property tax; phasing out and eliminating the business property tax; freezing Minnesota’s general tax in?ator; establishing a limited moratorium on state rulemaking and regulations; reforming prevailing wage laws to lower the cost of construction projects; and enhancing the Angel Investment Tax Credit - which matches start-up businesses with people looking to invest their money - to spur entrepreneurship and economic growth.

“Putting more people to work will permanently improve our tax collections, as more people will be paying income taxes to the state,” Schomacker said. “I believe easing some burdens will encourage private sector businesses to grow their operation and hire more employees, and Reform 2.0 will do just that.”
