ST. PAUL – State Representative Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne) said he was pleased that bipartisan-supported legislation authorizing additional funding for the Center for Rural Policy and Development was included recently as part of a comprehensive Minnesota House agriculture finance proposal.
"I'm pleased that both Republicans and Democrats recognize how important the Center can be for investing in southwest Minnesota's future,” Schomacker said. "I'm sold on their objective to bring a new perspective on rural economies, and develop leadership and training for Greater Minnesotans."
Schomacker said the Center for Rural Policy and Development is a public/private partnership that seeks to improve the quality of life in rural Minnesota. The Center analyzes and conducts research on rural demographics, housing indicators, economics, health, education, and unemployment and tries to find solutions that will improve business in the area based on the statistics that are compiled.
Schomacker said the Center favors investment in current rural business expansion, rather than smaller towns spending their limited resources on attracting, and often times failing, to land huge corporations to Greater Minnesota. It also stresses the need to develop new skill strategies as well advanced leadership training to make rural areas more marketable.
“A business isn't going to just start up and create jobs without someone local to help lead it, and bigger businesses have told us that there is a perceived leadership drain in southwestern Minnesota,” Schomacker said. “This is a perception we have to change, because businesses aren’t going to grow here if they don’t believe our residents can help make their vision a reality.”
