NEWS RELEASE

REP. SCHOMAKCER RESPONDS TO GOVERNOR’S STATE OF STATE ADDRESS

ST. PAUL – On February 9, Governor Mark Dayton gave his State of the State address to members of the Minnesota House and Senate. State Representative Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne) said he was a bit disappointed with the governor’s tone, as well as some of his priorities.

“I thought he spent a great deal of his time focusing on the past,” Schomacker said. “When he did address the future, he talked about more spending, more borrowing, and increasing taxes, but did not say how he wanted to eliminate our $6.2 billion budget deficit.”

Schomacker said he stands with the governor when it comes to prioritizing job creation in Minnesota and reforming the way state government conducts its business. He noted that when Governor Dayton presents his full budget proposal next week, his recommendations will show if he is serious about challenging the status quo or content on keeping it.

Schomacker said he disagrees with the governor’s idea to raise taxes during this time of economic uncertainty, as well as adding to our debt by borrowing $1 billion to fund construction projects across Minnesota.

“As we move ahead with our budget balancing ideas, we must forward a plan that will fund priorities like education, transportation and public safety without raising taxes,” Schomacker noted. “With $32 billion to spend, we should be able to make this happen without forcing Minnesotans to spend more for state government programs.”
