ST. PAUL – State Representative Joe Schomacker (R-Luverne) is authoring a resolution urging the federal government to follow through on its promise to help fund the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System.
“Right now it doesn’t look like Congress wants to keep its funding promise, as Lewis and Clark has been labeled as an ‘earmark’ rather than a continued project,” Schomacker said.
When complete, the Lewis and Clark Rural Water system will provide reliable drinking water supplies to about 300,000 people in South Dakota, Iowa, and southwestern Minnesota. Of the 20 towns included in the plan, 11 are already up and running.
Schomacker said all the other organizations contributing to Lewis and Clark have renewed their commitment to the project, but if the federal government reneges, the project will come to a halt.
“We’re hopeful this resolution will put Lewis and Clark back on the federal government’s radar,” Schomacker said.
State Senator Doug Magnus (R-Slayton) is authoring the Senate’s version of the Lewis and Clark resolution.
