Another offer sent to governor

Second Offer in Little More than a Week Goes to Governor Dayton

Yesterday afternoon, legislative leaders meet with Gov. Dayton and presented him with their second budget compromise offer in little more than a week.

Legislative leaders announced that they will abandon an effort to seek $200 million in various tax-relief measures and instead move these funds to other priority areas, which are sought by Gov. Dayton.

The governor outlined in his May budget-veto letters concerns that additional funding in K-12 education, public safety and the judiciary are important priorities. Last week, legislative leaders offered an additional $110 million in funding of the priorities, which meet Gov. Dayton’s total spending requests on nearly 50 percent of his proposed budget. Today, legislative leaders outlined how these increases would be achieved, which was also a request by the governor at the time this offer was made.

Additionally, legislative leaders added funding to higher education ($50 million), transportation ($40 million), local government aid and credits ($20 million), Environment, Energy and Natural Resources ($13 million) and flood relief ($9 million).

The plan also calls for $100 million to be held back and kept in the state’s cash flow account.

Legislative leaders and Gov. Dayton agreed to step up their meeting schedule over the upcoming days in an attempt reach more compromise and avoid a state shutdown.
