Budget solution in the offing

Greetings!

Work will continue throughout the weekend to put the finishing touches on a plan to end the state shutdown, erase our $5 billion shortfall and set state spending for the upcoming biennium.

The Legislature and the governor reached a "conditional" agreement Thursday, meaning a framework is in place and work will take place over the weekend to put together the details. This is a fluid situation with many movable, negotiable parts so I will dive deeper into the specifics once things begin to take shape. I am sure we all will be able to find things we like and other things we dislike in the finished product, but that's all part of striking a compromise.

The basics of the budget agreement include the governor conceding his proposed tax increases and the Legislature compromising on some policy and reform measures. The General Fund budget would be set at $34 billion, a 6-percent increase over the last biennium and a reduction from the $39 billion we were scheduled to spend in the next two years.

We anticipate the governor will call us to the Capitol for a special session next week so we can approve a budget and get our state back up and running again. It is good to see we are moving in the right direction and I will let you know more as information becomes available.
