Dear Neighbor,
With just days remaining before a government shutdown, legislative leaders and I continue to ask Governor Dayton to call a special session to resolve the budget. Minnesota does not need a government shutdown, and Minnesota does not need higher taxes. During the regular session the Legislature passed a complete budget increasing spending within the state's means. And since the Governor vetoed our budget, legislative leadership has continued to offer compromise proposals to meet many of the Governor's requests. Negotiations continue, but it is unclear whether the Governor will move from his tax-and-spend approach to a compromise position.
On our end, compromise offers included: an additional $80 million for K-12 education to match the Governor's K-12 spending target; increased funding for public safety and the judiciary by another $30 million; and removal of our tax relief measures in exchange for the Governor dropping his income tax hike. Unfortunately all of our offers were rejected.
The next two days are our best--and last--opportunity to craft a consensus budget and avert a government shutdown. I am deeply opposed to a government shutdown and the negative effects it would have on Minnesotans and our economy. Nevertheless, I also strongly believe raising taxes and continuing an unsustainable spending model are even more harmful for Minnesota, and for our future. I remain hopeful we can solve the budget impasse.
I will keep you updated as negotiations between legislative leadership and the Governor continue. It appears progress is being made, but the Governor must understand we will not raise taxes on Minnesota families and job creators.
While legislative leadership was negotiating last Sunday, I participated in the Savage Dan Patch Community parade. It was great meeting and hearing from so many. There was clear support for keeping down taxes and spending.
Please do not hesitate to contact me with your ideas or questions. You can also call Governor Dayton at 651-201-3400 and ask him to call a special session to resolve the state's budget. The Legislature is ready and waiting to resolve the budget, and like you, we are looking forward to creating a stronger Minnesota for us all.
Sincerely,
Pam
