Dear Neighbor,
From January through May, my legislative colleagues and I worked diligently to pass a complete and balanced budget funding government at the level Minnesotans can afford, without raising tax rates. The governor’s absence from negotiations and his stalling to veto our balanced budget until the day after session were very disappointing. Now, the wait for budget negotiations and a special session continues as the governor remains disengaged and has barred his commissioners from participating in our ongoing hearings. The people of Minnesota deserve better.
If there is a government shutdown, it will be the result of the governor’s adamant push for a $1.8 billion tax increase to fuel a 15% growth in government spending. Neither a government shutdown nor tax increases are necessary—as demonstrated by our balanced budget presented to and vetoed by the governor. Our budget increased state spending by 6% by utilizing revenue growth. It implemented reforms to make our system sustainable. And it included increased K-12 funding and job pro-growth initiatives to help our economy—both Minnesota priorities. Time remains before the governor forces a shutdown, and I hope he will come to the table and act on the needs of Minnesotans, rather than the wants of government.
As the wait continues, I encourage you to stay informed and involved. I hope you will attend the Burnsville Legislators’ Town Hall with Representative Diane Anderson, Senator Dan Hall, other area legislators, and me on Wednesday, June 15th from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Burnhaven Dakota County Library (1101 County Road 42 West, Burnsville). I hope to see you there.
Sincerely,
Pam
