Dear Neighbor,
The final stretch of the 2011 legislative session is here, and our work to balance the budget and implement positive policy is moving forward at full speed. Our negotiations on omnibus finance and policy bills continue, including in the area of education—a passion of mine and a priority of our community.
One initiative continuing to garner attention is my third grade literacy bill. Recognizing how critical literacy is, this reform requires school districts and charter schools develop a local literacy plan to address and implement assessment of reading deficiencies in K-3, set strategies for reading intervention, and identify methods of parental notification and involvement. Reading skills build confidence, improve educational outcomes and help prepare our children to succeed in high school, college and beyond.
You can learn more about this initiative by watching my recent legislative update video, which can be accessed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B03nWrSuWXQ
I encourage your continued interest and involvement in the Legislature's work. Together we can create a brighter future for all of Minnesota.
Sincerely,
Pam
