Gov. vetoes bill to pay back K-12 money

Dear Friend,

We are putting the finishing touches on another week at the Capitol before taking a brief break in order to observe the Easter/Passover holidays.

I was greatly disappointed to learn Gov. Mark Dayton today vetoed a bill we sent to him that would have paid off delayed K-12 payments. Our bill would have not only paid off the entire 2011 shift, it would have begun paying off the shift we inherited from the previous majority.

Most Minnesotans – including legislators – opposed delaying K-12 funds last year. But that was then and this is now. Paying off that debt when we have the chance is the responsible thing to do.

K-12 shifts have gone on since the 90s. I didn’t like using the shift to help erase our budget shortfall last year. I think it is prudent to use a portion of our new surplus funds pay off this debt. It makes no sense to me the governor wants to keep this money in St. Paul instead of sending it where it belongs: with the schools.

I wish you and your family a blessed Easter/Passover and hope you are able to spend extra time with loved ones. Next week, I will be sending along a more thorough look at the meat and potatoes of what we have done this session, along with a look at what items remain. As always, I welcome your input on any of the issues.

God bless you and your family,
Joe
