LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Seeking funds to aid flood recovery

To the editor:

I have started the process of requesting emergency funding to help our area recover from this spring's flooding.

We can only pray this action proves to be largely precautionary and that our need for relief is relatively minimal. It is necessary to act now and position ourselves to capture state relief funds when we learn the extent of our flood damage. Delano applied for funding last year and was denied, but I will be working in St. Paul to make sure our case is heard this time. It is important to submit a request which meets our needs, but also is fiscally responsible in light of our tight state budget.

The threat significant flooding has had us a bit on edge and, as the owner of a business in downtown Delano, I know firsthand what local folks have been through in previous years and face this spring.

We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the leadership our local officials continue to show, including Mayor Dale Graunke; council members Betsy Stolfa, Holly Schrupp, Derek Schansberg and Dan Vick; City Administrator Phil Kern; Ernie Eden and the great Public Works Dept. team; Citizen Emergency Response Team members; Delano students; and countless other volunteers.

I will continue to pray for the safety and well being of people in our area and will work to deliver appropriate flood relief as necessary.

Sincerely,
Rep. Joe McDonald
