Key bills advancing through House

Friends-

It was a busy week at the Capitol, with the State of the State Address
and some very important bills reaching the House floor.

We passed one bill (HF 130) to erase $1 billion from our $6.2 billion
budget shortfall, another bill (HF 1) to speed up the permitting process
for businesses (HF 1) and still another (SF 40) to provide alternative
pathways for teachers.

Gov. Mark Dayton vetoed the bill to reduce our shortfall, so it's back
to the drawing board with that one. The veto came Thursday, a day after
the governor delivered his State of the State Address. He made a lot of
spending promises that will difficult to deliver. He also reiterated his
plans to increase taxes, something that would be damaging to many of our
small-business owners and other successful individuals. I disagree with
that tax-and-spend approach, especially since it runs counter to our
goals of creating more jobs and making Minnesota a better place to set
up shop.

The governor didn’t provide details of his tax increases, but they will
be included in his budget plan scheduled to be issued next week. I’ll
follow up after I’ve had a chance to take a look at his proposal.

Until then,
Joe
