GOV. SIGNS REP. LOHMER'S HUMAN SERVICES EXPANSION BILL FOR CHILDREAN WHO ARE DEAF, DEAFBLIND, OR HARD OF HEARING
REP. LOHMER’S HUMAN SERVICES BILL SIGNED INTO LAW
Legislation expands mental health treatment options for deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing children
ST. PAUL – Representative Kathy Lohmer (R-Lake Elmo) stood with a broad human services coalition at the end of June as Governor Dayton signed Lohmer’s unanimously-supported legislation expanding interstate mental health treatment options for Minnesota children who are deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing.
“I am proud of the work we accomplished with the Commission of Deaf, DeafBlind and Hard of Hearing Minnesotans (MNCDHH), Minnesota Association of Deaf Citizens, and the Minnesota Department of Human Services. It was truly a collaborative effort on an issue that transcends partisanship,” Rep. Lohmer stated.
Lohmer added: “Though Minnesota is a leader in the delivery of health and human services, we do not always have the services at hand to best care for deaf, deafblind, or hard of hearing children. The new law allows families to explore specialized treatment and care options beyond our state’s borders in order to receive the attention their children need and deserve.”
Chapter 148, House File 2253 allows children who receive care under the state program Medical Assistance Services for Children with Severe Emotional Disturbance to pursue out-of-state treatment and specialized health care services from providers who abide under the Interstate Compact on Mental Health.
