Dear Neighbors,
Today Minnesotans received more good news about the state budget and our economy.
Minnesota Management and Budget economists unveiled a budget forecast that confirms our state’s economy is growing, and our budget situation is improving. In other words, the Republican plan is working.
Last year, newly-elected Republican majorities entered the legislative session with a historic and astonishing $5.1 billion deficit, owing largely to uncurbed government growth and the excessive spending of your tax dollars.
Due to prudent fiscal management, in just one year the Republican-led Legislature was able to achieve a $1.2 billion surplus (adding together November and February surpluses), all without raising taxes and by restraining government spending. We have bridged a $6.3 billion gap – and that is not a small feat.
The extra monies we now have will go to our budget reserves and to pay back education shifts that have been put in place by different legislatures over the years.
While today’s budget forecast shows a surplus, it does not diminish the need to further control state spending and stop the growth of government. Improving our private sector economy and creating a sustainable state is our priority. Looking to the future, our reforms will set Minnesota on a positive track to better handle fiscal ups-and-downs, and become more stable, sustainable, and strong.
Bill Signed Into Law
Last week, Governor Dayton signed my legislation into law that authorizes community notification prior to a sex offender’s provisional discharge from the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP) to a halfway house.
I am pleased that Governor Dayton and a nearly unanimous Legislature supported this important public safety legislation. An informed public is better enabled to make public safety decisions about the health and welfare of their children if they know a dangerous sex offender resides in their neighborhood.

Capitol Conversations
Senator Ted Lillie and I had great discussions with constituents at last week’s Capitol Conversations.
I will be holding my next appointments on Friday, March 9 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Gorman’s Restaurant in Lake Elmo.
Please call Melissa Hackenmueller at 651-296-9471 to set up a 15-minute appointment, and always feel free to call or e-mail my office at any time. I am here to represent the interests and priorities of District 56A.
