Dear Neighbor,
As the 2012 state legislative session approaches, I want to encourage you to become civically engaged in the political process.
The Minnesota Secretary of State’s website details the specifics for this year’s precinct caucuses. The site provides a printable brochure that orients newcomers to the electoral events, including contact information for all official state political parties.
All participants will caucus on Tuesday, February 7. I encourage you to attend – this is your opportunity to become active at the grassroots level and make your voice heard.
Reform 2.0
I look forward with great optimism to this year’s legislative session. We head into the new year with an $876 million budget surplus and continued dedication to Reform 2.0.
Reform 2.0 includes measures that will reduce spending and debt, eliminate mandates, and restore Minnesota’s economic climate. It will change the discussion from “tax and spend” to “reform and improve.”
As your state legislator, it is my commitment to ensure that these goals are achieved. For that reason, I am the chief author of House File 410.
House File 410 eliminates the taxation of Social Security benefits. Minnesota is one of only seven states that taxes these benefits. Fixed- and low-income families simply cannot afford the added burden of Social Security taxes – not to mention the fact that they’ve already paid taxes on them in the past.
In addition to House File 410, I have been working on disability housing issues. I am committed to providing the best care at the best value for those who are the most vulnerable.
I look forward to session start, as the Legislature continues to foster government accountability, streamline services, and promote proactive, outcome-based solutions. I am confident that we can make Minnesota an even greater place to live, work, and raise a family.
As always, it is a pleasure and a privilege to serve you in St. Paul.
Sincerely,
Kathy
