Rep. Moran: Passage of Voter ID Amendment Shameful
St. Paul, Minnesota – This evening, on a party line vote, the House Republican majority passed HF 2738 which would add another constitutional amendment on the 2012 ballot, requiring Minnesotans to show a valid, government-issued photo ID to vote.
Regarding passage of the Voter ID Constitutional Amendment, State Representative Rena Moran (DFL – St. Paul) issued the following statement:
“Passage of this voter ID amendment is just another shameful reminder that Republicans are out of touch with the real issues affecting Minnesotans statewide and within our community. This bill is also a breach of trust that will take a long time to heal - if it ever does. This bill brings shame on this body.
“Instead of working on policies that will put people in our community back to work or increase the safety in our neighborhoods, Republicans have decided to continue their crusade against the rights of select Minnesotans—just as they did last session with the marriage amendment.
“One estimate suggested that in here in our community in 65A, approximately 2500 eligible voters would not be able to exercise this core principle of our democracy. Making the disenfranchisement of so many members of our community is not only indicative of misplaced priorities, simply put, it’s shameful."
