Passage of Gun Bill is Reckless, Unnecessary

Saint Paul, Minnesota – Today, the house voted to send a bill to Governor Dayton which would greatly expand on a current Minnesota law known as the Castle Doctrine, allowing individuals to execute deadly force in order to prevent danger within their home. SF 1357 would expand the definition of property greatly and the bill has received staunch opposition from peace and police organizations such as the Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association and the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association.

State Representative Rena Moran (DFL – St. Paul) offered the following statement on its passage:

“Passage of this legislation is symbolic of all the wrong priorities for Minnesota moving forward. It will do nothing to make our communities safer, instead, fostering an environment of shoot first and ask questions later.

“This law is an unnecessary distraction that will likely have devastating consequences for many Minnesotans. A safer Minnesota will result from stabilizing neighborhoods through investment in programs aimed at securing communities.

“It’s time to get back on track with the true priorities of this session: getting Minnesotans back to work and strengthening poor, working, and middle class families."
