LEGISLATURE PASSES REP. LEIDIGER’S E-VERIFY BILL
Legislation ensures state government uses E-Verify program on new hires
St. Paul – Legislation by Representative Ernie Leidiger (R-Mayer) passed the House today that would mandate the state government to verify eligibility of newly hired employees using the federal E-Verify program. Currently, companies who contract with state government on contracts over $50,000 must use the system. As the largest employer in the state, this legislation mandates state government also use the program.
“E-Verify ensures that only those who are eligible and legal for employment are hired,” Representative Leidiger explained. “The federal database provides an easy method for employers to know immediately, and with greater accuracy, that their workers are eligible for employment. In the end, it will save the state time, resources, and taxpayer dollars.”
Currently, employers may not know for over a year that a new hire is ineligible to work in the state. By E-Verifying new hires, eligibility is known right away. “Workers should not have to compete for seasonal jobs with people who are not eligible to work in this country,” Leidiger said. “This bill says that government should set the example: if the private sector is encouraged and mandated to use it in order to conduct business with the state, then government should use the program as well.”
E-Verify has been supported and applied by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The bill passed the floor with bipartisan support and now heads to the governor.
