Putting the People's Business First in Saint Paul

Amidst the excitement of being sworn in and beginning my work as your representative, legislative colleagues and I are wasting no time in putting the peoples’ business first at the Capitol. Last week we introduced our first package of bills to bring responsibility back to government and job growth back to Minnesota.

Job number one must be job growth in the private sector. Now is the time to remove barriers to job creation and improve this state’s business climate. House File 1, introduced last Monday, would streamline the permitting and environmental review process. Minnesota’s current system is seen as overly complex and obstructive, causing potential projects to look elsewhere. The initiative would establish timeline goals, remove duplicative requirements and cut administrative costs to make the review process more efficient while protecting the environment and natural resources. This is just one of many efforts to reduce the burden on job creators and make Minnesota more competitive.

Another key bill establishes priority-based budgeting in the legislature. Crafting a budget from the ground up, this initiative will require agencies to develop a strategic plan, identify priorities and justify new spending. Priority-based budgeting replaces the business-as-usual of government spending with a business-like approach focused on results. By setting a budget, setting priorities and staying within its means, government can provide our citizens the services they rely on and the responsibility they deserve.

Other highlights of last week’s bill introductions include:
• Reducing the size and cost of the state workforce
• Allowing alternative teacher licensure
• Repealing the nuclear power plant construction moratorium
• Lowering the corporate income tax
• Mandate relief for local units of government

My colleagues and I are committed to the people and priorities of Minnesota. With a responsible government and an open door to economic opportunity, the people of our community and all of Minnesota will put us back on track for a stronger state and a brighter future.

Throughout the session I will keep constituents updated with these columns and regular email updates, which you can sign up for at www.house.mn/34a. Constituents are also welcome to stop by my office or call anytime with questions, comments and concerns. I look forward to hearing from you and making sure your voice is heard in the legislature.

Sincerely,

Ernie
