LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Kiel


This week I wanted to share my 2012 legislative survey results with you. Some of the legislation we have introduced this year include tax relief for businesses and repaying the education shift.

1. What would be the best way to fund a new stadium for the Vikings?
A. Electronic pull tabs:19.39%
b. Racino: 21.43%
c. Block E Casino: 16.33%
d. Legacy Amendment funds: 5.10%
e. No public money should be used: 43.88%
f. “Fan” tax applied specifically to goods and services purchased by football fans: 41.84%

2. What is the best way to begin to repay the education shift?
A. Reduce spending in order to grow the surplus: 84.69%
b. Increase taxes: 15.31%

3. Where is the greatest need for tax reform in Minnesota?
A. Income Tax – increase: 9.18%
b. Income Tax – decrease: 29.59%
c. Property Tax – increase: 1.02%
d. Property Tax – decrease: 44.90%
e. Sales Tax – increase: 19.39%
f. Sales Tax – decrease: 9.18%
g. Corporate Tax- increase: 18.37%
h. Corporate Tax – decrease: 19.39%

4. Should the governor and Legislature work to provide greater property tax relief to homeowners and businesses?
A. Yes: 88.78%
b. No: 9.18%

5. Should the governor and the Legislature hold the line on/reduce spending and keep flat/cut taxes to help grow the economy?
A. Yes: 81.63%
b. No: 15.31%

6. Should Minnesota focus its transportation spending on a new light rail or new roads and bridges?
A. Light rail: 4%
b. Roads and bridges: 96%

7. Should a “right to work’ provision be added to Minnesota’s Constitution? (That is, workers who do not choose to join a union would not have to pay “fair share” dues.)
a. Yes: 62.24%
b. No: 32.65%
