LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News from Representative Kiel

Last year I introduced a bill that would allow students to participate in a science or tech class in order to receive credit towards high school graduation. I am introducing this bill again this year, Career and Tech 2.0. This bill was heard in the Education Reform Committee this week; it allows high schools to improve standards for students graduating after 2014 and gives them the opportunity to take alternative classes to the three required sciences. For instance if a student was interested in soil conservation but had to take chemistry as a last science requirement, he or she could take the soil conservation class instead of chemistry.

This bill clarifies that students can meet a state high school graduation requirement in science by satisfactorily completing a career and technical credit specified by the school.

Sometimes it is hard for students to understand the opportunities in chemistry or physics. If the students were able to take a class of interest to them, like agriculture or natural resources they would receive exposure to chemistry type concepts but in a way that is more applicable to a future occupation for the student.

The Voter ID bill also passed the House floor after a long session on Tuesday. The Voter ID bill proposes an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution that would require all voters provide a photo ID prior to a ballot being cast or counted.

The constitutional amendment also requires that persons voting in a polling place on Election Day present valid government-issued photographic identification before receiving a ballot. The state would be required to provide photographic identification to eligible voters at no charge.

It has been a busy week in St. Paul and I would like to hear from you. If you haven’t yet, click here to participate in my 2012 legislative survey.
