LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Kiel

On Wednesday lawmakers received the annual budget forecast. Minnesota Management and Budget released the annual forecast which indicated a surplus of $323 million.

This surplus is certainly good news for Minnesotans. This money will go toward paying back our reserves. This is definitely a step in the right direction, reducing the size of government and not raising taxes is key to our economic growth.

During the 2011 session, legislators eliminated a $5.2 billion budget deficit and implemented reforms. Unemployment in Minnesota has decreased to 5.7 percent, lower than the national average of 8.5 percent.

Our economy is continuing to improve. At the legislature we need to keep our focus on government reforms that will put Minnesotans back to work and give our job creators the tools they need to grow in Minnesota.

Minnesota’s property tax relief programs provide property tax relief directly to taxpayers. Last year, the Legislature passed and Governor Dayton signed a $30 million increase in direct refunds for Minnesota homeowners.

The two main programs for property tax relief are, the Property Tax Refund for all homeowners, subject to income guidelines, and the Special Property Tax Refund designed for homeowners who see unusually large increases.
