Happy new year! I hope that this year brings many blessings to you and your family. I am looking forward to the things that this year will bring. The Legislative session is quickly approaching and I would love to hear some of your ideas on how we can help you run your business better, reduce your taxes and cut over-regulation.
We toured the state this fall talking to local governments, and businesses about Reform 2.0 for the upcoming session. We wanted to hear from you about what we can do in St. Paul to make business easier for you, and get our economy moving again.
I also wanted to inform you regarding property tax relief in the new year. There are two programs for Minnesota homeowners, the Property Tax Refund for all homeowners, subject to income guidelines, and the Special Property Tax Refund designed for homeowners who see unusually large increases.
The Property Tax Refund
?Refunds up to $2,640 to homeowners.
Eligibility requirements:
$99,240 for households with no dependents.
For households with dependents the limit increases with family size, up to $121,140 for households with five or more dependents.
Senior or disabled homeowners may be eligible with household incomes up to $124,790 with five or more dependents. Your property must be classified as your homestead; You cannot be a dependent on someone elses taxes.
Special Property Tax Refund
Specially designed for homeowners whose property taxes increase by 12 percent or more.
Refunds are paid up to 60 percent of the increase.
Eligibility requirements:
Property taxes must increase at least 12 percent; The increase must total more than $100; The increase cannot be due to new improvements; There is no income limit.
Representative Davids, the House Tax Chair is also introducing legislation that would refund 90 percent of the increase.
