Yesterday brought good news for the state budget. The office of Minnesota Management and Budget released the November forecast numbers which indicated an $876 million surplus in the state’s budget. During the 2011 session legislators worked hard to eliminate a $5 billion deficit. In the last four years the state budget has included runaway spending and has been in the red since 2007.
In accordance with state law the funds from the surplus must be used to replenish reserves. $255 million will be used to bring the state's cash-flow account back to a total of $350 million, which is the statutory maximum and the remaining $621 million be used to bring the state's budget reserves to a total of $648 million, $ 5 million below the $653 million statutory maximum.
We will need to continue keeping our budget balanced by eliminating out-of-control and unnecessary spending, and living within our means. Minnesota families and small businesses have to live within their means and state government needs to continue to do the same. Long term reforms and holding the line on spending during the last legislative session and special session were the keys to a surplus instead of the widely anticipated deficit.
We need to remain focused on job creation and strengthening our efforts to keep a fiscally responsible budget.
Sincerely,
Deb
