This week a Ramsey County Judge ordered the child care provider union election be halted. The union election, forced upon child care providers by executive order from the Governor will not be happening in December. Ballots were set to be mailed out on December 7th with results being determined by December 22nd.
Governor Dayton would only allow 4,300 subsidized child care providers to vote in this election, while leaving 7,000 providers without a vote. If this union were to become law it would not have come through the legislature. I’m glad that the Judge made it clear that if laws are going to be made in Minnesota they must be made through the law making body of the Legislature. The proposal to form a union should come through the Legislature as a bill. I would not support a bill that would try to unionize a group of people who do not want to be unionized.
The Judge ordered that the issue be reassessed on January 16th. We will know more then as to how this issue will proceed.
If you have any questions or concerns in the meantime please don’t hesitate to contact my office.
