LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Kiel - Remembering Veterans Day

November 11, is Veterans Day, a day we honor and celebrate those who have served in our armed forces. These men and women are the true heroes of America today. Veterans Day has been observed for over 90 years and publicly honors those who brave men and women who put our country before their own lives.

Veterans Day was established in November as “Armistice Day” in 1919 by President Wilson, one year after World War l had ended. He commemorated that day by saying, "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…"

In 1954, after World War ll the law was amended to change Armistice Day to Veterans Day, honoring all those who have served our country in war and in peace time. Preserving November 11th as Veterans Day provides everyone the opportunity to take this day to celebrate and remember those who exemplify patriotism in the utmost form while sacrificing so much for our country.

I would encourage you to find ways in your community to give back to those who have served to give us so much. There are many ways to volunteer whether through community outreach programs or through the Veterans Affairs office. The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs website has more information about volunteering. www.mdva.state.mn.us

We should also remember those families who are without a family member, the mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers, wives, and children. We honor them on Veterans Day as well; they are the silent heroes of war. We pray that our military men and women return home safely and soon.

Our role in the world is significant because of our strong military. So this Veterans day may we remember the sacrifice, patriotism and devotion of our military men and women to this great country we call home.
