LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Kiel

Last weekend I attended the Excellence in Action education conference in California with a few other Minnesota legislators. This trip was very valuable and gave much insight into the future of education around the nation. Technology has become a driving force of educating our young people and we must keep up with the world wide trends before we fall further behind.

The conference covered many topics including our use of technology in the classroom. I will say though, that we need to be cautious in the forms of technology that we use. And to make sure that with all of the vast information that comes with technology, including the use of the internet, we want to make sure that our students are being educated with correct and accurate information.

Another question that may arise through utilizing new technological tools is that our students could advance quicker as they adapt faster to technology than they may other materials. With this fast adaption the question arises of holding students back. We want to make sure that students are thriving and are continuing to be challenged. If a tenth grader were excelling considerably, would there be an option to send him to college early?

The use of technology in the classroom would also allow teachers to stay up-to-date on materials and assure that curriculums are also updated regularly. Teachers will also be able to explain materials to students in a way that they can easily comprehend. Students would also be able to take exams online in their classrooms and teachers would also be able to measure students’ progress and conceptual learning. Teachers could know exactly which subject students are struggling with and also excelling at.

Technology holds great promise for our students and I look forward to our teachers, faculty and students finding new ways to strive toward a bright future.

Sincerely,

Deb Kiel
