LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

News From Representative Kiel

I wanted to share with you a column that I submitted to the newspapers this week concerning education.

Education must continue to remain a priority at the state level. Our children need to have a superior education in Minnesota, and this year we were able to offer schools increased per pupil funding to provide some relief from the school shift.

Shifting school funds year after year is not ideal, and quite frankly something that needs to be addressed very soon. We cannot continue borrowing from our schools. I look forward to working on education reform next legislative session.

Because of the school shift, we were able to increase funding to some Minnesota schools, and many of those schools are located in district 1B.
The Marshall County Central school district will see an increase of $551 per pupil, increasing total per pupil funding to $11,087 through 2013. Thief River Falls will see an increase in funding of $299, increasing overall per pupil funding to $8,921 by 2013. Climax will see an increase of $758 in per pupil funding rising to $12,863 through 2013. Crookston schools will see an increase of $323 per pupil through 2013 raising total per pupil funds to $9,485.
East Grand Forks will see an increase in funding of $102 per pupil through 2013, raising total per pupil funding to $8,494. Fisher will see an increase of $983 through 2013, totaling $9,410 per pupil. Oklee schools will receive an additional $735 increasing per pupil funding to $11,572 through 2013. Plummer will see an increase of $224 increasing total per pupil funding to $ 11,010 through 2013.

The Warren-Alvarado-Olso school district will also see an additional increase of $1,012 through 2013, bumping total per pupil funding to $12,139 through 2013. Red Lake Falls will see an increase of $843 per pupil, increasing total per pupil funding through 2013 to $11,221. Win-E-Mac will receive additional funding of $660 through 2013, raising total per pupil funds to $10,050 by 2013. Stephen-Argyle Central will see total per pupil funding increase to $11,841, an increase of $894 through 2013.

District 1B will greatly benefit from this increase in funding, and it will continue to close the funding gap, and improve funding fairness between rural and metro school districts. Although the situation we are in is not ideal, and I share your frustration regarding the school shift, we need to remember that reform begins with one step and it doesn’t happen over-night.

I look forward to coming back next session to find more ways to innovate and reform government so that we can put our kids first, and make sure that they remain a priority when it comes to their education.

Sincerely,

Deb Kiel
