Today Governor Dayton called a special session to end the government shutdown. Our parks and rest areas will soon re-open and construction jobs will start up once again, and 22,000 state employees will head back to work.
Governor Dayton was proposing a new 4th and 5th income tax rate along with statewide property tax on homes over $1 million. A business tax increase along with health care surcharges and sales tax increases totaling $4.1 billion, but thanks to Republicans none of these tax proposals are in the final budget. During this fragile economy taxing Minnesotans is one of the worst decisions for economic improvement. I was happy to hear that the governor finally conceded his position on taxes last week and agreed to the Republican proposed budget from June 30th.
The budget bills that have been finalized between Republican legislative leaders and the governor include a lot of important reforms as well as future spending reductions.
The budget that we are voting on, although not ideal, balances the budget without a tax increase. It is time to end this shutdown and get Minnesota working again. We have learned that we do not need a tax increase in order to balance our budget, and that we are capable of living within our means.
Sincerely,
Deb
