A budget framework has finally been reached! Governor Dayton on Thursday announced that he would agree to the Republicans budget proposal from June 30th. Raising taxes has never been an option for us and now the governor has accepted our offer. Legislators and the governor will continue working out the fine details over the weekend.
I am pleased that we will balance the general fund budget with the money we have, $34 billion. We do not need a tax increase in order to balance our budget. Governor Dayton began this journey pushing for the one of the highest income tax rate in the country and in the end the governor has dropped all his tax increases and is willing to join us in balancing the general fund budget with the $34 billion in the checkbook.
This budget is responsible and will put 23,000 state employees back to work and will also re-open state parks, rest stops and will get our construction projects going once again as well as getting a fishing license.
It is my hope that the Governor will call a special session early next week and the shutdown will ultimately end. Please stay tuned next week as we enter a special session and pass a final budget.
It’s time to end this shutdown.
Sincerely,
Deb
