I was hoping for a different outcome and it is my hope now that this will only last a short time. I share your frustration and disappointment in the shutdown of state government. It appeared that Governor Dayton and legislative leaders were quite close on a deal yesterday, but couldn’t quite get a deal done.
We presented the Governor with a complete and balanced budget that increases funding to K-12 Education and increased funding to Health and Human Services by over $500 million.
We have also compromised with the Governor and offered to meet him at the funding levels he set for K-12 Education, the courts and Public Safety. That means we agree on almost half the budget, and it is my hope that the Governor will sign these bills and fund our schools and put our teachers and law enforcement back to work. Our education system and numerous state workers should not suffer only because the Governor wants to sign a complete budget before he’ll sign individual bills we agree on.
I remain hopeful that the Governor will call legislators back to special session very soon. We need to get this budget settled and it is up to the Governor when he will call us back.
I plan to keep you informed of the progress here in St. Paul as we move forward in this government shutdown.
If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call my office.
Sincerely,
Deb
