POST SESSION UPDATE

News From Representative Kiel

Since we passed our budget in May, we have offered Governor Dayton two different compromises in an effort to break the stalemate of negotiations.
We have proposed two compromises to the governor, one being to meet his funding levels for education, the courts, and public safety. This makes up nearly half of the general fund budget. The second being, if we agree to not give any tax relief that the Governor would agree to drop his tax increase. The Governor has even gone so far to say that these proposals are extremely disappointing without even taking time to think about them and review them. Do you think this is extremely disappointing?

This is a reasonable compromise, and if the Governor won’t accept these then he needs to tell us what he will accept. The ball is in his court and now it is his turn to tell us what he is willing to compromise on.

While a shutdown appears to be looming it is completely avoidable and unnecessary. The Governor needs to compromise and call us back to the legislature. We cannot shutdown the government over a tax increase. Governor Dayton said himself, on the campaign trail and also during his State-of-the-State address that he would not shut the government down.

Please call Governor Dayton and tell him to take the offer Republicans have made and to settle the budget before June 30th.
