Friends –
This week has been one of the busiest weeks since I took office. We are working very hard on budget bills on the House floor. Below is my press release in regards to the passing of the K-12 Education bill. I have also included some information from MN Homeland Security and Emergency Management regarding flooding information.
News Release
Representative Deb Kiel Votes in Favor of K-12 Education Finance Bill
Rep. Kiel says schools are our priority and removing mandates on school districts and the increase in per-pupil funding will allow for school boards to make necessary improvements to curriculums as well as facilities.
St. Paul – Today Legislators voted in favor of the K-12 Education finance bill. The bill, as proposed, will increase per-pupil funding through 2014 and is proposed to add funding for small schools with less than 1,000 students.
This budget bill aims to fund new enrollment options for students in low-performing districts.
It also repeals the integration aid program and redistributes the money to the per-pupil formula to benefit every student across the state.
“Our school districts need to know that they can make sound decisions for their school districts. They know what is going on in our local schools and the reforms that need to be made,” said Rep. Kiel. “By removing these mandates we are giving our school boards the opportunity to enact reforms that can improve our schools and close the achievement gap.”
This bill also creates a new teacher evaluation system based on student academic achievement and locally-determined factors. This new evaluation will replace the seniority-based retention process relieving districts of state-imposed mandates. The new teacher evaluation program gives local districts a say over how their teachers are evaluated and ends the “last hired, first fired” way of evaluating teachers.
The bill passed with a 68-59 vote.
