Weekly Update

Friends,
Congratulations to our new Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. Major General Shellito. He is the former Adjunct Major General of the Minnesota National Guard and has a long history of honorable service. I look forward to working with him and his department in helping to honor our Veterans, active service members and their families.
On Education: a bill I am sponsoring (House File 183) works to raise the bar for both student and teacher excellence. It will require that teachers pass a basic skills test before they enter the classroom. My bill has received bi-partisan support. It will not have a cost attached to it, and it works to raise the bar in our schools.
In addition, Alternative Pathways to Teacher Licensure bills that were passed onto K-12 finance will allow professionals into the classroom once they have met the required standards. This will help in areas where schools and students are struggling to excel; we must empower willing and talented people to share their knowledge in the classroom.
On Public Safety: we moved forward a bill to eliminate the duplicative cost and time for background checks on people registering to purchase firearms. We increased the penalty for harming or killing our Police Dogs. Finally, we are working to protect our children from serious sex offenders in our neighborhoods.
On the Budget: House File 130, was passed to reduce the deficit by $1 billion. I heard from many of you this summer to “cut the spending.” This is the first step.
Wishing you a wonderful week - Andrea
