Friends,
This week we looked to quickly and responsibly tackle our state’s budget. Government must start to do what Minnesota families have been doing for years—living within its means. With the proposal of an Early Action Budget , we are taking an active role in addressing the state’s budget deficit.
I also met with students from Concordia University to discuss their continuing efforts in passing the Kyle Herman Bill. The students have worked with legislators to protect children in the classroom from abuse and streamline the abuse reporting process.
Kyle Herman’s story is one that we all can stand behind. Kyle has Down syndrome and as a kindergartener he suffered tremendous physical and emotional abuse ranging from slapping to being threatened by his teachers. Unable to explain the abuse to his parents, Kyle suffered in silence for nearly two years. Last Legislature, a portion of the bill was made law.
I am grateful to be a part of the conversation that aims to empower parents to be in charge of their child’s education. Please read more about The Kyle Herman Bill.
Education reform continues to be a bright spot in my week. Our children deserve a strong education to prepare them to be a part of a strong work force. By addressing the challenges that are schools are facing we can provide our children with every opportunity for success. We must reward schools that are performing well and evaluate schools are that are not. Innovation in education is the key in turning around struggling schools. I will continue to speak for our community as we work together to make our schools and our students the best and brightest in the nation.
