Dear Neighbor,
We have an update on the budget compromise that would bring an end to this needless state shutdown. While we have reached a conditional agreement, the bad news is it appears some strong policy initiatives I support will fall by the wayside in the name of compromise.
The gist of the agreement we reached is the governor will drop his proposal to raise income taxes, while the Legislature concedes reform and policy changes.
I will reserve judgment on the total package until more details are in place but, suffice to say, just about everyone will be able to find something they do not like about this agreement; that is just the nature of compromise.
Our General Fund spending will be at $34 billion, which is a modest increase over the previous biennium, but substantially less than the $39 billion we were on pace to spend.
We are still working to put the details in play and some components remain negotiable, so I will pass along more when things truly fall into shape. It looks like the governor will call us into a special session next week to wrap up the budget.
Sincerely,
Glenn
