Dear neighbor,
As you know, the issue of gay marriage has been in the news quite a bit recently. I remain a strong proponent of keeping the definition of marriage as between one man and one woman. With that said, I’m also a strong supporter of individual rights. These beliefs have led me to sign on to legislation that would legalize civil unions between same-sex couples. I made this decision after serious consideration as to how we can protect the institution of marriage while also affording individual rights to those who want to share certain legal benefits (property rights, inheritance rights, hospital visitation, etc.) with whomever they desire. I understand this is a difficult issue for everyone and people have passionate points of view as it relates to marriage. Ultimately, I strongly believe marriage should be defined as the union between one man and one woman, but also believe in respecting the rights and dignity of individuals. My hope is that this bipartisan compromise concludes discussion on divisive issues and allows us to get back to work on the balancing the budget and private-sector job creation.
