PRESS RELEASE

FRANSON INTRODUCES BIPARTISAN SOCIAL MEDIA PRIVACY LEGISLATION

ST. PAUL – Rep. Mary Franson (R-Alexandria) introduced bipartisan legislation this week that would prohibit employers from demanding social media passwords from employees as a condition of employment. The legislation, House File 293, is co-authored by Reps. Tina Liebling (DFL-Rochester), Mary Liz Holberg (R-Lakeville), Marion O’Neill (R-Buffalo), Ben Lien (DFL-Moorhead), Jim Newberger (R-Becker), Andrea Kieffer (R-Woodbury), and Joe Radinovich (DFL-Crosby).

“I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation that protects employees and folks looking for a job,” said Franson. “Employers certainly have a right to know about those seek to work for them, but should not be able to invade the privacy of employees and job applicants.”

Franson’s legislation has been referred to the Labor, Workforce, and Regulated Industries Committee where it is waiting for a hearing.
